« The red carpenter ant and the black carpenter ant are two of the most common types found in Canada. The red carpenter ant has a dark brownish-black body, with a reddish-brown upper body. The black carpenter ant is dark brownish-black all over.

Some adults have wings and mate to create the satellite nests of the mother colony. Feeding on tiny insects and plants, carpenter ants also like sweet and protein-rich human food. This is why they sometimes settle in houses or restaurants in late autumn to find accommodation and food.

The parent colony remains outside in winter, and ants will hibernate there. Satellite nests that are made in houses or businesses each contain a laying queen, and several nests can be made in a single building (in attics, between walls or floors, under stairs, in damp cellars, in rotten window sills, in garages, etc.) Workers usually go out at night to bring food from the pantry. Within 3 years, a single nest can contain 2000 ants (or more).
